Edmund Brownless teaches bel canto: the vocal technique of the 17th - 19th centuries. It is the ideal technique for early music as well as all other periods.
Technik und Repertoire
Belcanto-Technik / Bel canto Technique
Für eine Gesangsstunde bekommen Schüler ein Einsingen von 15-20 Minuten mit Belcanto-Technik. Seit dem Mittelalter liest man in Traktaten über die zwei Register, ihren Zweck und ihre Vorteile für das Singen. Sänger haben fast immer beide Register benutzt, um effektiver singen zu können. Belcanto hat deswegen seine Wurzeln im Mittelalter und in der Renaissance und ist die Gesangstechnik des 17., 18. und 19. Jh., d. h. die einzige und die geeignetste Technik für die Hochrenaissance und den Barock.
For a voice lesson pupils receive a 15-20 minute warm-up in the bel canto technique. Since the middle ages one reads about the two vocal registers, their use and advantages for singing. Because of this singers have almost always used both registers in order to sing more effectively. Bel canto has its roots in medieval and renaissance music and is the perfect technique for music of the renaissance, baroque and all following periods.

Alte Musik / Early Music
Schüler bekommen dazu Unterricht in Repertoire, Stil, Verzierungen und, wenn gewünscht, historischer Aussprache. Grundlage für die Barock-Gesangsmusik ist das Studium der italienischen Schule des 17. Jh. Hier lernt der Schüler die Musik von Caccini, Peri und Monteverdi u. a. kennen und erfährt alles über die Anfänge der Oper. Der italienische Einfluß auf die nachfolgende deutsche, englische und franzosiche Barockmusik wird dann gezeigt und die Aufführungspraxis wird auch dabei gelernt.
Pupils also get training in repertoire, style and, if so wished, historical pronunciation. They learn the basics of baroque vocal music beginning with Italian songs of the 17th century. Here the singers learn about the earliest art songs and operas when they learn songs by Caccini, Peri and Monteverdi. The italian influence on the slightly later German, English and French music will be shown and historical performance practice will also be learned.
